Jehovah’s Witnesses contradicts main doctrines of traditional and legitimate churches. Followers of Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the blood transfusion and military service duty in Korea. Also, Jehovah’s Witnesses treats a state (or national) system as Satan and causes social problems. What is the Jehovah’s Witnesses? 1. 창교자 및 연혁 찰스 테즈 럿셀 (Charles Taze Russell)은 1852년 2월 16일 미국 펜실베니아주 알레거니(Allegheny)지방에서 태어났다. 그는 20세 때 당시 안식교 지도자 J · H · 페인트의 저서를 탐독하다 예수의 재림시기에 관심을 갖게 됐다. 이후 자신과 동일한 생각과 신앙을 가진 사람들을 모아 성경연구 모임을 갖기 시작했고, 1879년 「아침의 여명(THE Herald of the Morning)」이란 잡지를 냈다. 이 잡지의 이름은 이후 「파수대」로 변경됐다. 1. Founder and History Charles Taze Russel was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA, on February 16th,1852. He had passion in eading books written by J.H Paton, a leader of the Seventh Adventist Church, and in the timing of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, when he was twenty (20). He had a bible study group meeting with people who has same ideas and faith as his. In 1879, this group published a magazine named 「the Herald of the Morning」. Later, this magazine changed its name to「the Watchtower」. 럿셀은 1874년 이미 예수 그리스도가 인간의 눈에 보이지 않게 재림했다고 주장, 이방인 시대의 종말은 1914년 아마겟돈 전쟁이 일어나 세상 정치 권력이 멸망하고 천년왕국의 시작이 있을 것이라고 강조했다. 그러나 예언이 빗나가자 충격을 받았고, 1916년 10월 31일 캘리포니아에서 설교를 하고 집으로 돌아오다 중도에 사망했다. In 1874, Mr. Russel insisted that Jesus Christ came to this world in an invisible form. In his prediction, the age of Gentiles would be ended in 1914 by the occurrence of Armageddon. Also, he predicted that governments in this world would be destructed and God’s kingdom would be established in 1914. However, his prediction failed. He was shocked by this failure and died on October 31st, 1916, on his way to his home, after giving a preach in California. 럿셀이 죽자 J · F · 루터포드가 제2대 교주가 됐다. 그는 1975년 다시 10월에 아마겟돈 전쟁이 있을 거라고 예언했지만 실패했다. 럿셀이 실패한 1914년 예언을 세상 끝날이 아닌 끝날의 시작이라며 조만간 아마겟돈 전쟁이 일어날 것이라고 했다. 나아가 예수의 재림은 육적인 것이 아닌 영적인 것이며 그리스도가 이미 1914년 인간의 눈으로 보이지 않게 영적으로 재림해 1918년 그의 성소에 들어가 하늘 정부를 세우고 모든 기성 교인들을 정죄 심판하고 파수대의 교리에 불응하는 자는 무조건 정죄 받는다고 주장했다. After Russel’s death, J.F. Rutherford became the second leader of this group. He predicted that this world would be destructed in October 1975 by Armageddon. But, as we all know, this prediction also failed. He insisted that the year of 1914 mentioned in the Russel’s prediction did not mean the end of Armageddon, but the start of Armageddon. He also said that the battles for Armageddon will start very soon. Further, Rutherford claimed that Jesus Christ already came to this world in spirit in 1914. He claimed that Jesus Christ entered intothe holy place in 1918 and established a heavenly government, in order to judge Christians in traditional churches who reject doctrines of Jehovah’s Witnesses. 1942년 1월 8일 루터포드가 사망하자 “나단 에이취 노르(Nathan H. Knorr)”가 제3대 교주가 됐다. 노르체제는 1950년대에 부분적으로 출간된 신세계번역판성경을 자체에서 완역했다. 노르가 죽자 1977년 “프레드릭 더블유 프란츠(Fredrick.W. Franz)”가 제4대 교주가 됐다. 프란츠는 불과 몇 년밖에 일을 못했지만 100만 명이 넘는 신도들을 확보했다. On January 8th, 1942, Rutherford died and Nathan H. Knorr became the third leader of this group, Jehovah’s Witnesses. Knorr completely translated all of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ bible into English in 1950s. Knorr died in 1977 and Fredrick. W. Franz becamethe fourth leader of this organization.Under Franz’s leadership, the number of followers became over one million. 2. 여호와의 증인의 주요 주장 1) 삼위일체(三位一體) 부정: 예수는 피조물, 성령은 활동력 여호와의 증인은 삼위일체를 부정한다. 이들은 삼위일체란 용어가 성경에 없으므로 비성서적이라고 주장한다. 예수와 성령도 하나님이 될 수 없다. 이들은 예수를 하나님으로부터 창조된 피조물로 간주하며 예수의 신성을 부인하고, 심지어 예수를 미가엘 천사장이라고 주장한다. 성령은 단지 하나님의 활동력이라고 주장하며 성령의 인격성을 부인한다. 2. Main Insistence of Jehovah’s Witnesses 1) Denial of Holy Trinity: Jesus Christ is a creature and Holy Spirit represents God’s activism Jehovah’s Witnesses rejects the Trinity, since they say that there is no definition of Trinity in the Bible. Under Jehovah’s Witnesses’ doctrine, Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit cannot be God. Jehovah’s Witnesses treats Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit as creatures of God and denies the divinity and personality of them. It claims that Jesus Christ is an arc angel, Michael and that Holy Spirit is only God’s activism. ▶ 성서 가운데 “삼위일체”라는 말이 전혀 나오지 않는데도 그분을 “삼위일체”라고 주장하는 사람들이 있다. (『우리는 지상낙원에서 영원히 살 수 있다』, p.38) ▶ There is no “Trinity” in the Holy Bible, but there are people who insists the Trinity. (『You can live forever in Paradise on Earth』,p.38) ▶ 예수께서는 “하느님의 유일하게 태어난 아들”이라고 불리셨는데, 그것은 여호와께서 그분을 직접 창조하셨기 때문이다. (『영원한 생명으로 인도하는 지식』, p.38) ▶ Jesus Christ has been called as “God’s only Son”, since God creates him. (『Knowledge that leads to Everlasting life』, p.38) ▶ 성서에는 미가엘과 그의 천사들이라는 표현도 나오고 예수와 그의 천사들이라는 표현도 나온다. (중략) 따라서 미가엘은 바로 하늘에서 자신의 역할을 수행하고 계신 예수그리스도라고 결론지을 수 있다.(『성서는 실제로 무엇을 가르치는가』, p.219) ▶In Bible, there are the phrases ‘Michael and his angels’, but also ‘Jesus Christ and his angels’. (omitted) Therefore, we can conclude that Michael is Jesus Christ working in heaven. (『What does Bible really teach?』, p.219) ▶ 성신, 혹은 성령에 관하여는 한위(位) 혹은 한 인격체가 아니라 하느님의 활동력이다. (『우리는 지상낙원에서 영원히 살 수 있다』, p.40) ▶ Regarding the Holy Spirit, it is neither the third person of Trinity nor a personality of God, but it is only God’s activism. (『You can live forever in Paradise on earth』, p.40) 성경은 예수 그리스도가 육신으로 현현하신 성자 하나님임을(빌2:5~10), 완전한 신성과 인성을 소유한 분임을(롬9:5), 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 분임을(골1:15) 증거하고 있다. 또 성령에 대해 “그”로 호칭(요16:13), 인격체임을 분명히 밝히고 있으며, 지식이 있고(고전2:11), 감정이 있고(엡4:30), 주관적인 의지(고전12:11)가 있음을 우리에게 분명히 알려주고 있다. Bible clearly shows us that Jesus Christ is the only son of God and God in flesh and blood (Phillips 2:5~10) and that he has the perfect and complete divinity and personality (Rome 9:5). Also, Bible indicates that Jesus Christ has been existing from the very first, prior to the all creatures’ birth(Colossians 1:15). Regarding the Holy Spirit, Bible describes him as “he” (Johns 16:13) which shows his personality. Also Bible exactly and clearly shows us that Holy Spirit has his own knowledge (1 Corinthians 2:11), emotions (Ephesians 4:30), and his own will (1 Corinthians 12:11). 2) 1914년 영으로 재림한 예수 여호와의 증인은 요한계시록 12장 말씀을 인용해 예수가 1914년 하나님의 하늘 정부의 왕으로서 통치를 시작했다고 주장한다. 1914년이란 결과는 어떻게 도출한 것인가? 다음은 『우리는 지상낙원에서 영원히 살 수 있다』에서 발췌한 내용이다. 2) Jesus Christ came again to this world in a spiritual form in 1914 Jehovah’s Witnesses insists that Jesus Christ has ruled the heaven as a king of heavenly government since 1914, by quoting the words from Revelation Chapter 12. How do they make the conclusion that Jesus Christ came again in 1914? The answer is in the book titled 『You can live forever in Paradise on Earth』. ▶ “나무”로 상징된 하나님의 통치권은 기원전 607년에 잘리었다. 더는 지상에 하나님의 통치권을 대표하는 정부가 존재하지 않았다. 그리하여 기원전 607년에 예수 그리스도께서 후에 “열국의 지정된 때” 혹은 “이방인의 때”라고 말씀하신 기간이 시작됐다. ▶ God’s sovereignty symbolized as a ‘tree’ stopped in B.C. 607. There is no government which represents the God’s sovereignty on earth. It was B.C. 607 when the “time of all countries decided” or “the time of Gentiles” mentioned by Jesus Christ started. ▶ 계시록 12장 6절과 14절을 보면 우리는 1260일이 “한 때와 두 때와 반 때”와 같은 기간임을 알게 된다. (중략) 따라서 “일곱 때”는 360의 7배 곧 2520일이 된다. 이제 우리가 성서 법칙에 따라 하루를 일 년으로 계산하면 “일곱 때”는2520년이 된다. ▶ In Revelation Chapter 12, Verse 6 and Verse 14, we can realize that 1260 day period means ‘a time, times and half a time’ mentioned in Revelation. (omitted) Therefore, “seven times” means 2520 days which could be resulted by multiplying 360 and 7. Under the Bible’s calendar, one day means a year, so “seven times” means 2520 years. ▶ “열국의 지정된 때”는 기원전 607년에 시작됐다. 그러므로 그때 부터 2520년 을 계산하면 기원1914년에 도달하게 된다. 그 해가 바로 이 “지정된 때”가 끝난 해이다. (중략) 이것은 예수그리스도께서 1914년에 하나님의 하늘 정부의 왕으로서 통치를 시작했음을 의미하는 것이다. ▶ “Time of all countries decided” started in B.C. 607. Count 2520 years from B.C. 607, then you will approach to A.D. 1914. This is the year when the ‘appointed time’ ended. (omitted). This means Jesus Christ has ruled and controlled God’s heavenly government, since 1914. 3) 영혼멸절, 지옥부재 여호와의 증인은 영혼의 불멸을 부정한다. 인간은 생리적이고 물리적인 죽음으로 끝난다며 영혼 존재를 부인한다. 이들에게 “영”은 사람에게 전기처럼 감정도 생명도 없는 일종의 비인격적인 힘이다. 여호와의 증인은 지옥이 존재하지 않는다고 단정 짓는다. 지옥 존재에 대해 가르치는 종교는 하나님께 불명예를 돌리는 죄악이라고 주장한다. 3) No eternity of Soul and No hell of fiery torment Jehovah’s Witnesses denies eternity of human’s soul. Under its doctrine, human existence disappears with its biological and physical death. ‘Soul’ is deemed as a kind of power, just like electricity, without any emotion nor life. Jehovah’s Witnesses does not believe the existence of hell. It insists that teaching the existence of hell is dishonor to God. ▶ 사람이 죽을 때, 영(생명력)이 몸의 세포들에 생명을 주는 일은 중단된다. 전기가 나가면 전등이 꺼지는 것과 같다. 생명력이 인간의 몸을 유지시켜 주는 일을 멈추면, 사람-영혼-은 죽게 된다. (『영원한 생명으로 인도하는 지식』, p.82) ▶ When a person dies, his/her soul (life)stops supplying its power to cells in his/her body. A light bulb turns off when electricity is gone. A death causes a soul to stopmaintaining human’s body. (『Knowledge that leads to Everlasting life』, p.82) ▶ 사탄은 거짓 종교를 이용해 사람들로 하여금 몸이 죽은 후에도 자기들이 영들의 세계에서 계속 살 것이라고 믿게 만든다. ▶ Satan uses false religion and makes people to believe that soul eternally lives in the heaven after biological death. 성경 여러 곳에는 지옥에 대해 말하고 있다. 그러나 이들은 성경에 등장하는 지옥과 관련해 자의적으로 해석, 자신들의 교리를 합리화하고 있다. 『우리는 지상낙원에서 영원히 살 수 있다』에는 “스올”과 “하데스”를 가리켜 단순한 “무덤”으로, “게헨나”를 가리켜 “쓰레기 처리장”으로, “불못”을 가리켜 의식을 지닌 상태의 고초가 아닌 “영원한 죽음”으로 해석하고 있다. In Bible, there are many references to hell. However, Jehovah’s Witnesses arbitrarily interprets ‘hell’ mentioned in Bible and justifies its doctrine that there is no hell. According to the book named “You can live forever in Paradise on Earth”, ‘Hades’ or ‘Sheol’ means a grave and ‘Gehenna’ means ‘waste disposal site’. Also, it interprets “the lake of fire” as “eternal death”, not a spiritual status. 4) 부활과 십사만사천 여호와의 증인은 믿는 자뿐 아니라 여호와를 알지 못하는 자들도 부활 할 것이며, 천 년 동안 여호와를 섬길 기회를 얻는다고 주장한다. 또한, 예수 이전 시대의 사람들은 지상 백성의 일부로 부활하며 예수 이후 극소수의 거듭난 사람들, 즉 십사만사천의 여호와의 증인만 하늘에서 살도록 부활돼 지상 낙원을 통치한다고 한다. 4) Resurrection and one hundred forty four thousand (144,000) followers Jehovah’s Witnesses insists that not only its followers, but also other people will resurrect and have same opportunity to serve Jehovah for one thousand years. Also, they insist that people born before Christ’s birth will resurrect on earth and some renewed people born after Christ’s birth of which number is 144000 people, Jehovah’s Witnesses, will live on heaven and control the paradise on earth. ▶ 여호와에 대해 전혀 알지 못해서 그분을 섬기지 못했거나 그분께 순종하지 못한 사람들은 모두 어떻게 될 것인가? (중략) 그들 또한 부활 될 것이며, 참 하느님에 관해 배우고 그분을 섬길 시간이 주어질 것이다. 천 년 동안 이 죽은 사람들은 부활돼 충실한 사람들과 함께 땅에서 여호와를 섬길 기회를 얻게 될 것이다. (『성서는 실제로 무엇을 가르치는가?』, p.72) ▶ How will the people who does not know, serve or obey Jehovah? (omitted) They will resurrect and be given an opportunity to learn and serve God. For a thousand years, deceased people will resurrect on earth and have same opportunity to serve Jehovah ith faithful people who resurrects. (『What does the bible really teach?』, p.72) ▶ 제한된 수의 인간 남녀는 하늘 생명으로 부활될 것이다. (중략) 하느님께서는 얼마나 되는 사람들을 그리스도와 함께 통치하도록 하늘로 데려가실 것인가? 성서에 의하면 단지 십사만사천 명뿐이다. (『영원한 생명으로 인도하는 지식』, p.88) ▶ A limited number of men and women will resurrect on heaven (omitted). How many people will God take to heaven? According to the Bible, only 144000 will be taken by God. (『Knoweldge that leads to everlasting life』, p.88) 3. 여호와의 증인 사회적 문제 여호와의 증인 신도들은 국기에 대한 경례 및 애국가 제창은 우상이므로 하면 안 된다고 주장한다. 나아가 의무교육도 포기하며, 국가 공무원이 되는 일은 단호하게 거부한다. 국토방위를 위한 병역의무를 기피하고 공공 선거 등 정치활동에도 참여하지 않는다. 여호와의 증인 신도들의 이러한 반국가적인 행위 이유는 세상 정부를 사탄 체제로 보기 때문이다. 3. Social Problems caused by Jehovah’s Witnesses Followers of Jehovah’s Witnesses never salute the national flag nor sing the national anthem. Furthermore, they give up the compulsory education supplied by the government and they never apply for public offices. They reject compulsory military service and do not participate in any political activities. Jehovah’s Witnesses treats governments in the world as Satan’s systems and they do anti-national activities. 여호와의 증인은 성경에서 “피를 멀리하라(행15:20)”, “피를 먹지 말라(레17:14)”를 오역해 신도들에게 수혈을 금지시키고 있다. 따라서 수혈을 하지 못해 죽음을 맞이하는 안타까운 상황들이 지속적으로 발생하고 있다. Jehovah’s Witnesses falsely interpretes phrases in the Bible, such as “abstain from blood (Acts 15:20)”, “you must not eat blood of any creature (Leviticus 17:14)” and forces its followers not to have any blood transfusion. Such doctrine has continuously caused deaths of followers who could have survived, if they receive blood transfusion. 4. 여호와의 증인 주요 활동 여호와의 증인 신도들은 두 명씩 짝을 이루어 가가호호 방문해 「파수대」, 「깨어라」 등 홍보지를 나눠주거나, 사람들이 많이 다니는 길거리에 가판대를 설치에 홍보지 및 소책자를 무료로 배포한다. 불특정 다수에게 손편지나 문자를 보내 여호와의 증인을 홍보하기도 한다. 여호와의 증인 공식 웹 사이트 “WATCHTOWER”(watchtower.org)는 자신들의 교리를 체계화해 알리고 있고, 자신들의 의학적 견해 및 일상생활을 위한 방침을 제시하고 있다. 4. Main activities of Jehovah’s Witnesses For evangelism, followers of Jehovah’s Witnesses visit people from house to house for distributing Jehovah’s Witness publications and literature, such as 「the Watchtower」and 「Awake」. Also they install newsstandsand give free brochures and small books to people. Sometimes, they send letters or text messages to many and unspecified persons.Also Jehovah’s Witnesses runs WATCHTOWER(watchtower.org), the official websiteof Jehovah’s Witnesses and uploads its doctrines, medical opinions and its policies for common life. 여호와의 증인은 꾸준한 포교활동으로 성장했지만, 기독교 정통 교리를 정면으로 부정하며 성경을 자의적으로 해석해 한국교회로부터 “이단”으로 결의됐다. 반국가적, 반사회적인 문제로 인해 기독교인뿐 아니라 비기독교인에게도 경계의 대상이 되고 있다. 그러나 여호와의 증인은 더욱 조직적으로 움직이며 많은 사람들을 미혹하고 있다. Jehovah’s Witnesses has grown its influence in Korea, but it is decided as a heresy, since its doctrines are completely opposite to the doctrines of legitimate and traditional churches and Jehovah’s Witnesses arbitrarily and falsely interprets the Bible. It becomes serious cause of many problems, as its doctrines are anti-socilal and antinational.
